In eastern Canada, the common sand dollar (Echinarachnius parma) forms dense groups called beds that occur from shallow intertidal waters out to the offshore continental shelves (Figure 17). Contrary to their name, sand dollars are found in a range of sediment types, from coarse gravelly sand to fine silt.

In addition to their religious symbolism, Sand Dollar represents wealth and abundance. Their delicate, intricately patterned shells are considered lucky finds. Overall, they signify transformation, rebirth, prosperity, spiritual growth, and awakening.

How Much Is a Sand Dollar Worth? Because sand dollars are so prolific, they are very common. The cost of a live sand dollar for an aquarium might run between five and fifteen dollars. You can pick up a sand dollar skeleton at many local beach souvenir shops from anywhere from a dollar to five dollars.

Another version: If they're purple or brown or gray, they have to stay. If they're white or light, you can hold on tight. When in doubt, gently put the sand dollar back in the ocean. That sand dollar you just rescued could live another six to ten years.
